Hotel Association Wants to Add Surcharge to Rooms to Support Tourism

The Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association wants to add a surcharge to hotel rooms to support the marketing of Canada’s capital.

The hotel association is launching a new Destination Marketing Program to encourage hotels, motels, inns and bed and breakfast operators to add a 3 per cent surcharge on the room rate, and provide the funds to the hotel association for marketing campaigns.

The surcharge on hotel rooms is estimated to raise up to $7.5 million a year to support tourism marketing by Ottawa Tourism.

The hotel association says Ottawa Tourism’s funding will be reduced by $4 million a year at the end of this year once Ontario Government transition funding ends.

A surcharge on hotel rooms in Ottawa was in place prior to the implementation of the HST.

Officials with the Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association says if it gains support for the surcharge, the new Destination Marketing Fee could be implemented on September 1.
